How does it work?

This tool computes the MD5 hash (128 bits, 32 hexadecimal characters) of a text or a file, directly in your browser. MD5 is still widely used as a checksum to spot accidental changes to a file.

However, MD5 is cryptographically broken: two different files with the same hash can be crafted deliberately. Never use it to sign, authenticate or store passwords.

Examples

A file checksum

MD5 of “abc” = 900150983cd24fb0d6963f7d28e17f72. Recomputed after a transfer, an identical hash indicates a file that was not accidentally altered.

Constant length

Whatever the size of the input — a word or a 2 GB movie — MD5 always produces 128 bits, or 32 hexadecimal characters.

Frequently asked questions

Why are MD5 and SHA-1 marked “broken”?
Two different inputs with the same hash (a “collision”) can be produced in a few seconds for MD5, and at reduced cost for SHA-1 (SHAttered attack, 2017). They remain useful as checksums against accidental errors, but must no longer be used for security (signatures, integrity against an adversary).
Is MD5 suitable for passwords?
No, never. MD5 is fast, so a graphics card tests billions per second. Use bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2, which are designed to be slow and salted.
Hexadecimal or Base64: what is the difference?
It is only a way of writing the same bytes. Hexadecimal uses two characters (0-9, a-f) per byte; Base64 is more compact (4 characters for 3 bytes). The hash is identical; only its representation changes.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. All the computation happens in your browser, in JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your text, your files and your hashes never leave your device: no network request is made during hashing, and nothing is stored on a server.
