This tool computes the SHA-512 hash (512 bits, 128 hexadecimal characters) of a text or a file. It is the 512-bit variant of the SHA-2 family, often faster than SHA-256 on 64-bit processors.
Like SHA-256, it is suited to integrity checks and signatures, but not to storing passwords directly.

Frequently asked questions
Is SHA-512 more secure than SHA-256?
It offers a wider security margin (512 bits), but for most uses SHA-256 is already more than enough. SHA-512 can be faster on 64-bit machines.
Hexadecimal or Base64: what is the difference?
It is only a way of writing the same bytes. Hexadecimal uses two characters (0-9, a-f) per byte; Base64 is more compact (4 characters for 3 bytes). The hash is identical; only its representation changes.
